Current Activities
- Global Emissions Inventories
CGEIC,
in collaboration with the UN Global Emissions Inventory Activities working
group (GEIA)
has completed inventories on a 1° x 1° latitude/longitude grid
of the following species: SO2, SO4= , NO, NO2
for 1985; Lead for 1989 (Pacyna, J.M., M.T., Scholtz, Y.F. Li, 1995. Global
budget of trace metal sources. Environ. Rev. 3: 145 - 159.); Pesticide
emissions for 1989. CGEIC has prepared the SOx/NOx and Pb emission inventories
with sector distribution on two height levels (0-100m and >100m). The
two height levels are based on the physical stack height of point source
emission where such data are available. There are plans to update these
inventories as new data become available.
- Global Population Data Base
- A population data base on a 1° x 1° latitude/longitude grid
has been developed for the year 1990. (Li, Y-F. Global Population Distribution
Database. CGEIC Report to the United Nations Environment Programme, March
1996). Population is frequently used as a surrogate for the distribution
of emissions when actual emissions or usage data are not available.
- Collaborative Project with China
- CGEIC has established a joint project with the Environmental Protection
Agency of Shanxi Province in China. The project includes creating a data
base to store population statistics, data on emission sources, and ambient
air and water quality monitoring data. A processing system is being developed
to produce gridded data sets for the province on 1/6° x 1/4° latitude/longitude
grid for pesticide usage rates, and emissions of SOx, NOx, and lead.
- CGEIC Pesticide Emissions Modelling
- While there are widely accepted techniques for creating emissions inventories
of stationary point sources, mobile sources and some area sources, presently
there are no accepted techniques to quantify the air-soil and air-water
exchanges of pesticides and other chemicals. CGEIC has, therefore, developed
a pesticide emissions model for estimating pesticide emissions to air resulting
from agricultural applications. (Pesticide Emissions Modeling: Development
of a North American Pesticide Emissions Inventory, Report # CGEIC-1997-1,
Canadian Global Emissions Interpretation Centre, May 1997).
