January 2005 - WIND RESOURCE SEMINAR - This one day workshop was held to examine the unique challenges that the RES contracts pose for developers and financiers of wind farms in Ontario. Competitively tendered, fixed-price, 20-year RES Contracts provide long term revenue streams, but put all the financial risk on the front end of the development process.

Topics included:

  • Ontario's market challenges
  • understanding RES Contracts
  • requirements for project debt and equity financing
  • dealing with uncertainty in wind resource assessments
  • uncertainty in capital and operating costs
  • insurance, warranties and operational risks

September 2001 - Clearing the Air – New Air Regulations including O.Reg 127/01
Ontario industry faces several new air regulations, including the new Airborne Contaminant Discharge – Monitoring and Reporting Regulation (O.Reg 127/01). This highly successful regional seminar, hosted by ORTECHs Windsor office, was over-filled by environmental co-ordinators from all industrial sectors throughout Southwestern Ontario and Michigan. Speakers presented a comprehensive overview of the many new government initiatives, plus details of some of the more critical changes. MOE speakers outlined the laws, while senior ORTECH and key industry representatives presented valuable how-to tips and compliance strategies for companies.

April 2000 – On the Bubble - Air Permitting Procedure Changes in Ontario
Soon after MOE granted the first comprehensive or bubble concept Air Certificate of Approval for two large plants in Ontario, ORTECH hosted this seminar for industry to help managers determine the applicability of the new permitting procedures to their operations. In addition to ORTECH speakers, senior MOE management presented the drivers for the change, while an invited speaker from one of the two corporations presented his firms perspective and the perceived shortfalls and benefits.

November 1999 - Directions in Air Dispersion Modelling
Presentations by Ontario MOE on planned changes to air dispersion computer models, including a summary of the technical differences in the proposed models and applications to specific industrial sites were detailed. A presentation was provided to refinery staff of a national petroleum firm. The expected impact of the model changes was discussed, and software hands-on demonstrations were included for participants.

October 1998 - Odour Assessment & Control
Discussion of odour issues as they affect the environment with emphasis on sources, the science of odour measurement and regulatory compliance. Case studies presented. Information provided on how firms can be proactive on odour mitigation or reduction.
